Overview

GENERAL FUNCTION:  Operating within the policies, procedures, and practices of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, this position is responsible for facilitating member involvement and engagement by utilizing intrinsic coaching skills to assist members in finding their personal YMCA path.  This position provides a key opportunity to build relationships with members, helping them to utilize their membership to the fullest and build healthy lifestyles.  Wellness Coaches are responsible for exemplifying professionalism and relationship building skills as they work individually with members, connecting them to the YMCA community.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Conduct new member welcome calls to begin relationship building process.
  2. Conduct wellness coaching sessions, delivering unique coaching to meet the specific needs of individuals.
  3.  Review member’s health assessments, feedback and goals and assist with linking information to their lifestyle choices.
  4. Provide support and encouragement to assist members in making lifestyle choices to positively impact their health
  5. Maintain records on each participant as directed by guidelines and procedures.
  6. Monitor participant progress on a regular basis to evaluate program effectiveness and progress toward goals.
  7. Monitor the wellness center areas to ensure a safe, hazard-free environment, addressing safety issues as directed.
  8. Continuously monitor wellness center areas to assist members with questions and issues.
  9. Continuously facilitate member involvement by actively seeking opportunities to build relationships.
  10. Actively promote member engagement by encouraging involvement in related Y programs and small communities.
  11. Assume a leadership role for members, demonstrating professionalism and equipment expertise.
  12. Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of the wellness center areas by cleaning equipment, desks, and all surface areas regularly.
  13. Assist, as required, with training and orientation of new Y staff.
  14. Know all emergency procedures and be able to demonstrate them.
  15. Complete accident/incident reports and submits to supervisor or designated staff person.
  16. Attend department and Branch staff meetings as required.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
  18. Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to read, write, perform simple mathematical functions and basic computer skills
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age
  3. Completion of high school degree or equivalent
  4. American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid/BBP within 45 days of hire
  5. YMCA Orientation and Safety Training within 45 days of hire
  6. YMCA Wellness Coach Orientation within 45 days of hire
  7. YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principles within 45 days of hire
  8. YMCA of Greater Des Moines Wellness Coach I , Wellness Coach II, and Wellness Coach III training OR other approved Intrinsic Coaching certification within 45 days of hire
  9. YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning Certification OR current personal training certification with one of the current National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) Accredited  Certification Programs, one of the current certification programs accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education & Training Council (DETC) or a personal training certification program reviewed and approved through the YMCA of Greater Des Moines internal review procedures within 45 days of hire

  9. Ability to work with minimal supervision, taking initiative to assist in developing others
  10. Ability to make sound judgments and transfer learning from one situation to another
  11. Ability to distinguish and articulate the difference between Personal Training and Wellness Coaching
  12. Ability to demonstrate an understanding of YMCA Coaching and ability perform the required skills, including behavior change model, motivational interviewing, listening and reflective listening skills, appreciative inquiry and SMART goals
  13. Ability to maintain confidentiality on member information
  14. Ability to demonstrate professional conduct at all times
  15. Ability to serve as a healthy lifestyles role model for members and staff
  16. Ability to demonstrate general knowledge of YMCA programs and services
  17. Attend trainings and/or courses to maintain certification as required by the YMCA
  18. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members
  19. Availability and ability to work a minimum of two shifts per week and one weekend per month
