    1. Follow proper registration procedures to ensure fees are collected.
    2. Follow established and approved pre-screening procedures.
    3. Assist members in developing realistic, attainable goals and continually modifying training objectives
    4. Develop an individualized, goal oriented fitness plan for each member assigned.
    5. Develop and conduct personal training sessions based on goals and abilities of participants.
    6. Instruct member on proper form, technique and execution of fitness plan exercises for optimal performance/results.
    7. Motivate member to work to maximum and safe potential, providing physical and psychological assistance, support and encouragement.
    8. "Spot" and/or perform exercises with member for the benefit of the member’s workout.
    9. Encourage participants through individual attention as well as verbal, written and electronic correspondence.
    10. Promote member engagement by encouraging involvement in related Y programs and small communities.
    11. Maintain records on each participant as directed by guidelines and procedures.
    12. Monitor participant progress on a regular basis to evaluate program effectiveness and progress toward goals.
    13. Attend department and Branch staff meetings as required.
    14. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
    15. Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values



    1. Ability to read, write, perform simple mathematical functions and basic computer skills
    2. Must be at least 21 years of age
    3. American Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid Certifications or equivalent certifications approved by the YMCA   (available upon hire)
    4. American Red Cross Blood Borne Pathogens Training or equivalent training approved by the YMCA   (available upon hire)
    5. Y Orientation Session (available upon hire)
    6. Bachelors degree in a Health & Fitness/Wellness related field or a minimum of three (3) years experience in personal training, wellness coaching, sports coaching, or group exercise instruction
    7. Current personal training certification with one of the current National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) Accredited Certification Programs, one of the current certification programs accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education & Training Council (DETC), a personal training certification program reviewed and approved through the YMCA of Greater Des Moines internal review procedures or a current Stott Pilates Reformer Certification..
    8. Minimum of one (1) year personal training experience or a minimum of 6 months YMCA of Greater Des Moines employment 
    9. YMCA of Greater Des Moines Wellness Coach 101 and 102 certification or other approved Intrinsic Coaching certification   (available upon hire)
    10. YMCA Healthy Lifestyles Principles   (available upon hire)
